College Football

They like their collage football in these parts!

I can see the Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium from the window of my hotel -- it's massive.

Yesterday there was a practice session going on. I was politely 'moved along' when I was about to take a picture -- "Practice is not open to the public, sir"!

Tex Mex

Now that I've got round to uploading some of the pictures I've taken, here is what I had for lunch yesterday.

I plan on eating a lot of this type of stuff when I'm here. You really can't get anything as good in the UK.

Texan Cuban

So this is what I had for lunch. A 'pressed Cuban sandwich' from a food cart a couple of miles south of downtown.

The place was my second choice -- my first is shut on Tuesdays. I wish I'd know this after driving out to it. Never mind, the backup was pretty tasty!

Sunshine Overload

Another warm sunny day today! I don't know how I'm going to cope when I get home.

Beer Alley

Whole Foods Market started out in Austin in 1980. It's fair to say that I'm a bit of a fan having shopped in their stores in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York and London.

The store I've been to in Austin could be called their 'flagship', I guess. I love it (I've been there on three separate occasions so far).

One of the great things its got is a 'Beer Alley'. Basically it's a refigerated corridor/room with an incredible selection of beer. I stopped by there tonight after my dinner (at Hut's Hamburgers) and picked up a six pack of Shiner Blonde. Very tasty beer.

Sunblock

Today marked the first day of 2010 that I've needed to put sunblock on!

I had a breakfast taco first thing and then drove out to Barton Springs. There is an open air pool there which is fed by aquifers/springs. The temperature stays constant all year round, and in the bright morning sunshine it did look appealing. Unfortunately I haven't brought any swimming gear!

Instead I went for a bit of a walk around the Lady Bird Lake to the south of downtown Austin.

My 'walk' turned into a an hour or so 'hike' -- ideal to work up an appetite for some more tasty Tex-Mex food!

Road Rules

Well I'm now into day 2 of my Austin experience.

One thing that almost derailed me on my first day was the drive from the airport to my hotel. I thought I had it all planned -- the route loosely memorised and various maps printed off from the internet. Well to cut a long story short I got a bit lost.

The roads/highways around here are bloody confusing and the signage doesn't really help sometimes. Fortunately I was able to retrace my steps (once I realised I had taken the wrong road -- which wasn't right away), and I got to the hotel in one piece if a little later than I expected.

I think I've got the hang of the driving now and also I've got my bearings a bit (and a slightly better map).

DirecTV

So this is a bit bizarre. I'm at about 35,000 feet somewhere over Texas watching Real Madrid v. Atletico Madrid live on television!

“How is this possible?” I hear you ask. Well JetBlue has DirecTV on it's planes which means you can watch about 30 channels of live TV. It also has XM satellite radio so you could listen to live radio if you wanted. Quite cool really.

The channel (Gol TV) I'm watching has all the adverts in Spanish but the commentary, analysis, punditry etc. is all in English. Well actually there isn't much analysis or punditry, just lots of adverts in Spanish.

One other I thing I watched a bit of was something on the Travel Channel – 'Deep Fried Delicacies'! All kinds of food, well, deep fried. I think the places they visited and food they tasted were exclusively in the Southern States and the people took real pride in the uniqueness of some of the 'delicacies' – deep fried hamburger anyone?

JetBlue

I'm just waiting for my flight down to Austin.

I'm flying JetBlue, which is a first for me. So far so good. I'm sat in their pretty new terminal taking advantage of the free internet access and being tempted by the food smells coming from the nearby food court. Time to eat I think!

Best Halal

It was a toss up between a big fat juicy hamburger or some 'street' food for dinner last night.

Despite the Arctic conditions I went for the 'street' food.

At the corner of 3rd and 56th are a couple of couple of food carts which serve 'meat' over rice. When I was here last year there was always crazily long queues at them (the cart on the southwest corner has a much longer queue than the one on the southeast corner even though they are run by the same people).

I joined the line for the southeast corner cart and order a 'mix meat' -- lamb and chicken over rice with some flat bread (naan?) and a bit of salad. The secret, apparently, is to then liberally apply the 'secret' white sauce and chilli sauce.

The food was good, filling and very cheap ($6). Oh and the chilli sauce had a serious kick.

34 degrees F (not C)!

It is seriously cold in New York!

I'm all packed in preparation for the mid-20s degrees C of Austin, not the last throes of winter that is being experienced in New York. Last night, when the gentle breeze picked up it was darn right frigid. My hands were like blocks of ice.

I'd been checking the temperatures here before I went away and it wasn't supposed to be this cold. I think it's the wind chill that is the killer.

BA175 LHR to JFK

So all in all it's been a bit fraught the last few days!

Thankfully I'm now sat comfortably in a BA 777 somewhere over the Atlantic on my way to New York. In fact I'm sat more comfortably than I expected having been upgraded from World Traveller Plus to Club World!

The journey down to Heathrow (via Guildford) was very straightforward. We were parked up at 7.45am having seen no signs of people on strike. Terminal 5 seemed very similar to how it was when I was there the previous August. The one noticeable difference was the number of BA and BAA staff about and several big school groups off on trips to far flung corners of the globe.

Because of the strike I wasn't able to drop my luggage off until 2 hours before the scheduled departure time (normally it's 3 hours). Cliff and I sat and had a coffee in Cafe Nero, and once Cliff left I had about half an hour to wait.

Bang on the dot of 9am I dropped off my bag and then was through security very quickly. Once airside it did seem a bit quieter, than last year despite the hordes of school groups.

I grabbed some food from Pret and then took the train to T5B, where my flight was due to depart from.

I found my gate and was pleased to see a 777 parked at it – surely nothing could go wrong now?

Well as 11am approached it became clear that things were not quite going to plan! An announcement was made that said that there would be a delay because of the “increased time taking to brief the crews”. At this point I had visions that this was a smokescreen and in fact no crew would turn up, the flight would be cancelled, and I would be spending my holiday in Hounslow!

Thankfully my 'worst case scenario' didn't have time to get fully formed in my mind before the flight crew and cabin crew came striding through the terminal and got on the plane.

Eventually boarding was started and we had to put up with the pantomime 'secondary security' check because we were flying to the US. This involved everybody's hand luggage being hand search and then a quick pat down. Very slow and frustrating.

However, things were about to take a turn for the better! My boarding pass was scanned by the gate agent and instead of the light going green it went red and there was ding sound. My original boarding pass was torn up and a new one was printed with the seat number 10K – Club World here we come!

OK so because of the strike action we get a 'simplified service' instead of the full Club World experience, but who cares? Just the seat, privacy and space will do me! We had a cold meal which consisted of a slice of quiche and a chicken salad with a slice of cheesecake for pudding. The chicken was bit rubbery, but otherwise it was streets ahead of the food I would've had in World Traveller Plus.

Flying Tomorrow?

So thanks to the loonie lefties in Unite/BASSA my original flight to JFK was cancelled! I got this news via a text message and two emails.

After a painless phone call to the Executive Club line I was able to re-book on to an earlier flight which was scheduled to fly. Unfortunately the 'earlier' flight had a departure time of 8.20am, therefore requiring a crazily early start for me and Cliff.

After a bit of thinking I decided to book a hotel at LHR for the Friday night (and the T5 Travelodge was only £32.50). Cliff was going to cycle over after he finished work. I'd get the bus to T5 in the middle of the night and he'd drive home in my car at some time more conducive to normal human waking patterns.

Anyway this was the plan for a few hours before I checked the BA website and found out my original flight (at the civilised departure time of 11am) had been reinstated!

Again a quick call to BA and I was back on BA175. The hotel booking was fully refundable, so apert from the credit card fee, no money lost.

I'm all packed now and fingers crossed this time tomorrow I'll be in New York!

#backingBA

I've just made my first ever 'post' on twitter!

Yes, as cliched as it is I am #backingBA. Surely the neanderthal thinking at BASSA/Unite will not prevail? Of course I have a slight vested interest in the outcome/resolution of this ill conceived dispute.

If all goes to plan then this time next week I'll be scurrying around New York, looking to maximise my NYC experience before I then continue on to Austin, TX. If it all goes 'pear shaped' coutesy of BASSA/Unite I've no idea what I'll be doing -- moping about T5 at LHR, drowning my sorrows......

It looks like I'll have another week of endless internet action as I try to keep up to date as to what is going on.
