Off to the Footie

I went to the MCG last night to watch the AFL game between the Essenden Bombers and the Hawthorn Hawks. And boy was it dull!

I struggle with AFL. It obviously requires a fair degree of skill, but it just never seems to have sustained periods of excitement and there are lots of scrappy bits which maybe I don't appreciate/understand. Also the game definitely goes on for too long – I left at half-time which was well over an after the start of the game.

The redeveloped MCG is a monster of a stadium. In fact maybe it's part of the problem because although there was a big crowd there were plenty of sections which were empty which doesn't help the atmosphere.

Because it was a night game the only beer on offer was Cartlon Mid-Strength – not a beer I'll be seeking out in a hurry!

When I left the game Essenden were leading and had looked like the better team. The final result didn't change and Hawthorn were 'thumped' by 40 points according to Sky News this morning.
